Making Shari is a very old technique that goes together with the creation of Bonsai. It actually means removing the bark of a section of the tree. The purpose is to give the tree an older appearance but above all to make the tree as it was its real size and growing in the wild. Wild trees often show the wear and tear, tormented by mother nature through lightning, storms, insects, drought, old age, etc.. It often goes together with the making of Jin. Removing the bark from the trunk is a much used technique with Junipers trees whose trunks can be quite spectacular in the wild.
